Beaches Near Charleston and How to Actually Get to Them

One of the quiet luxuries of living in the Charleston area is that the water is always close. But “going to the beach” here can mean several very different places, each with its own personality and, just as important, its own way of getting there. If you are new to the Lowcountry or just tired of circling for parking, here is the local rundown on the beaches near Charleston and how to actually reach them.

Folly Beach

Folly is the free-spirited one. Nicknamed the Edge of America, it has a walkable town center, a surf culture, casual restaurants and bars, and a wide public beach. There is a county park at the west end and a well-known view of the Morris Island Lighthouse from the northeast tip.

To get there, you head south on Folly Road through James Island until it ends at the beach. For many downtown and West Ashley residents, Folly is the closest option, which also means it gets busy. On warm weekends, parking fills quickly and traffic backs up on Folly Road, so early arrival is the difference between a smooth day and a frustrating one.

Isle of Palms

Isle of Palms, often shortened to IOP, is a wide, easygoing beach with a county park, a small commercial strip near Front Beach, and the Wild Dunes resort community at the north end. It is a popular family choice thanks to the amenities and the generous, gently sloping shoreline.

Sullivan’s Island

Sullivan’s is the quiet, residential neighbor. There is no big commercial strip, just a handful of beloved spots like the restaurants along the small business district, a historic lighthouse, and wide, uncrowded stretches of sand. It has a calmer, more local feel that a lot of people prefer.

You get to Sullivan’s Island from Mount Pleasant by crossing the Ben Sawyer Bridge. The catch is parking. Sullivan’s relies largely on free but restricted street parking that fills up fast and is enforced, so read the signs carefully and, again, come early.

Kiawah and Beachwalker Park

Kiawah Island is largely a private resort community, but the public has a genuinely lovely way in: Beachwalker Park, a Charleston County park on the west end of the island with a parking lot, facilities, and a seasonal fee. It is further southwest of the city, reached by way of Bohicket Road and Betsy Kerrison Parkway through Johns Island, so plan for a longer drive of roughly forty-five minutes from downtown depending on where you start. The payoff is one of the prettier, less hectic beach days in the area.

Seabrook and Edisto

A couple more worth knowing. Seabrook Island, near Kiawah, is a private, gated community, so beach access is generally for residents and guests rather than the day-tripping public. Edisto Beach sits further south, roughly an hour or more from Charleston, and rewards the drive with a slower pace and Edisto Beach State Park. It is a favorite for people who want a quieter, old-school beach town feel and do not mind the extra distance.

The one rule that ties it all together

Whatever beach you choose, parking and timing are the whole game in peak season. The Charleston beaches are popular for good reason, and on warm weekends the parking situation, not the drive itself, is usually what makes or breaks the day. Arrive early, know where you are actually allowed to park, and you will spend your time on the sand instead of behind the wheel.
